Include ghee & healthy fats
Winter is the season when our digestion is optimum and the appetite is better. One is advised to have healthy fats to digest the heavy food consumed during winters. Ghee, sesame oil & seeds should definitely be incorporated, says the Ayurveda expert.
Drink hot water
As per Ayurveda, agni or fire, is an aid for your digestive health. Your digestive process can get damp and slow each time you drink cold water, especially during winters. In the cold winter months, it is advised to have a hot cup of plain water after every 3-4 hours. However, do not to drink water in between meals, and try to take hot water around 30-60 minutes post your meal, as it can help in better digestion process.
Turmeric milk
According to Ayurveda, turmeric is one of the best warming and healthy spices that one can have easily at home. Golden or turmeric milk can help in keeping you warm in winter days. Before going to bed at night, you can drink a cup of warm milk with a teaspoon of turmeric powder, along with cardamom or dry ginger for added benefits. It will keep your body refreshing and promote sleep quality as well.
Sip on herbal teas
Dr Bhavsar says consuming herbal teas with ingredients like ginger, cinnamon, lemongrass, green tea, lemon-honey, etc helps with digestion and reduces pressure on the liver while keeping one warm throughout.
Stay active
Staying active will keep up your energy levels and bodies warm in winter. All the Doshas in Ayurveda suggest various types of physical activity in order to balance our temperaments and bodies, and during the winter season, it is best to be precautious and have a daily exercise routine. The cold weather can cause stiff muscles, thus yoga and cardio can help with this winter problem too. You can start with slow and steady exercises that will not add stress to your body.
Massaging feet at night
The Ayurveda expert suggests massaging your feet with ghee and sesame/mustard oil to help with sound sleep at night which is mandatory for your immunity, gut and mental health.
Use warming spices
Warming Ayurveda spices such as cloves, cinnamon, black pepper, nutmeg, cardamom, ginger, and turmeric, can help in increasing the vata or air element in the body. It also helps in balancing the body in winter season. These spices can prove to be helpful in reducing the vata element and relieves winter issues such as joint pain, arthritis, cough and cold. You can use various ways at home to include these beneficial spices in your diet.
